Our 60-Year Reunion - October 1 & 2, 2021

A big THANK YOU to our classmate Linda Jones (McGuinn) for all of her hard work in planning and carrying out our 60-Year Class Reunion on October 1 & 2 in 2021.

Anyone who has pictures from our 60-Year Reunion, please send them so we can include them here.

Dear classmates,

Our reunion last week was such fun. I wish we would have had a microphone there to speak to you all at once to say how much it meant to me to see you there. I know it might be hard to believe, but I am a little shy speaking in front of a crowd…that’s not the same as yelling and screaming on a court or field! Totally different.

So many memories always come rushing back when I think of you and see faces from the past. We really did live in a simpler time, and, hopefully, you had as good an upbringing as I did. Those days were and still are happy times for me.

We went to our granddaughter's volleyball game this week; she is at SME and played SMN. Parents in the stands had on tees with SMN Bisons. I had to go over and talk to one of the moms about our Indians. She said it was hard for her also, she was an Indian alum.

Time marches on and, hopefully, we can see each other again. My only regret was not dancing with Jim. Here’s to all of you who attended the party, here’s to those we missed seeing, and here’s to all our many dear friends and classmates we have lost along the way. Take care, stay well, love to all.

Peggy Brock Kahler, Shawnee Mission North Indians

Guestbook Archive 2003-2014

From Rick Reynolds (12-25-19): 1943 Births, People about our age whom I recognize: Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jim Croce, Janis Joplin, Sharon Tate, Blythe Danner, Craig Morton, George Harrison, Lynn Redgrave, Bobby Fisher, Sly Stone, Bob Woodward, Eric Idle, John Major, Christopher Walken, Max Gail, Hervé Villechaize, Bobby Vee, Michael Palin, Gary Burgdorff, Jessi Colter, Bruce Weitz, Sharon Gless, Joe Namath, Newt Gingrich, Barry Manilow, Geraldo Rivera, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Johnson, Edward Hermann, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Mick Jagger, Ken Norton, Abigail Folger, Robert De Niro, Jean-Claude Killy, Joe Morgan, Julio Iglesias, Lech Walesa, Oliver North, Chevy Chase, Lance Rentzel, Catherine Deneuve, Sam Shepard, Lauren Hutton, Billy Jean King, Dave Bing, Jim Morrison, Steven Bochco, Keith Richards, John Denver, Ben Kingsley

From Rick Reynolds (12-25-19): What was going on our senior year?  September, 1960--June, 1961, a very interesting 9 months. Cassius Clay won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics. The American Football League was formed. OPEC came into being. The Flintstones premier. Nigeria becomes independent. Kennedy-Nixon debates. Kennedy elected president. Supreme Court desegregates public transportation. Population of the earth goes over 3 billion. US severs relations with Cuba. President Eisenhower delivers his “military industrial complex” speech. President Kennedy has the first live press conference in TV. Beatles first performance. Peace Corp established. Adolf Eichmann goes on trial for genocide during WW II in Jerusalem. Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man in space. Bay of Pigs invasion. Alan Shepard goes into space. President Kennedy announces a plan to land on the moon in the ‘60’s.

From Tom Dailey (10-9-19): Just found out - our classmate John Evans (SMN '61) lost his sister Judy on August 8th, 2019.  I'm not sure which class she was in (maybe '63), but was a SMN alum. John & I shared a beachfront apartment on Pacific Beach, CA (San Diego area) in late 1965... he was in the USMC and I the USN... we got out within weeks of each other and drove back to KC together.. he fixed me up with his sister.  hard to conceive of "young friends" passing.

From Terry Dyke (2-17-17): George Andrews’ Falls Put Him Down for the Count. George fell at Christmas into a carousel at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta Int’l Airport while traveling to visit his daughter Amy, whose family has recently relocated to Atlanta.  He banged up his face, back, and broke his upper right arm. Convalescing at their Frisco home in the Dallas area, George fell hard again mid-January, really hurting his back.  Bonnie, his wife of two years, called 911.  He was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Centennial in Frisco, where he had neck surgery, followed by back surgery.  A bone spur and a narrowing spinal cord under pressure have caused George to have very limited use of his extremities.  He moved to Warm Springs Post Acute Care in Allen, TX, to rehab, but that was hampered greatly by his right arm dislocation not properly healing, and a serious bedsore.  His kidneys are also an issue.  He was transported to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas for debridement and skin grafts for the sore February 13th.  Multiple procedures are required for the bedsore before arm fixing can begin.  Then a very long rehabilitation awaits. Though he has been hampered since Christmas and hospitalized for over a month, George is still fine from the neck up.  He’s still cracking jokes and is the hit of the ward for all the medical staff.  He covets your concern, contact, and prayers.  George is an avid Facebooker, so you can leave a comment there. He is hopscotching medical facilities at such a rate, a card to the home makes more sense than to a hospital room number: George Andrews, 15859 Wyoming Dr., Frisco TX 75035. Texting is an option at (469) 644-2535 [George] or (972) 989-7269 [Bonnie].  His e-mail is gfandrews26@yahoo.com.

From Bruce Younger (1-25-17): From George Andrews' wife Bonnie via Facebook: My sweet husband had two bad falls and is in ICU now for 10 days. He has had 2 Surgeries on his C3-7. He is paralyzed on both arms and legs. We need prayers for a recovery. It is going to be a long road back.

From Tom Dailey (12-3-16): Ya'know, it just occured to me this morning... We FINALLY have a reunion at a Golf Course, and Sulley wasn't able to attend.  Oh, but I toasted him there. We miss ya, Johnny... and all the others who were in our thoughts. - Tom

From Bill Cook (10-29-16): I was thinking about Dave (Paschal) and his Dad the other day as his Dad Wally was my 1st barber and then eventually Dave was my barber until I moved to Nebraska. He gave my son his first haircut. - Bill

From Linda Crawford (10-16-16): Back in Shreveport, finally settled back in but wanted to let you know it was so good seeing you again & let Peggy, Janet, Jane, etc (feel like I'm missing somebody) the same. Ya'll do such a fantastic job organizing & putting these reunions on, I'm sure everyone is grateful, as I am. Thank you! - Linda Crawford

From Tom Dailey (9-29-16): To Bill Cook (who DID make it), and the rest of you slugs who DID'NT - it was a grand time.  Nicely put together, and the venues were both done well.  Johnny's (95th. & Antioch) was the perfect "meet n' greet" place (they gave us old folks the back room), and the Milburn Country Club was very good.  The food was SPLENDIDO and for once, the band was pretty damned good.  Not the usual selection of has-beens who can't play anything but pseudo-rap; rather 4 guys who definately had their act together and produced some good stuff - they even did "Hey Joe" in the Jimi Hendrix style, for me.  Sorry, no pics from this end - didn't even think to pull the phone out and do some (sorta wish somebody got one of me in my "almost-a-tux"). Kudos to the ladies for puttin' it together.  -Tom

From Jim Swinehart (9-16-16): Just received a call from Dave McCall about our class reunion...short notice for me.  I now live in Branson, mo. Stone bridge, a golf community.  Surely some of my class mates play golf...come on down...I have a group of 25 guys that play on Mondays and Friday's.  I missed our 50th because I lived near Tampa, Florida five years ago.  Our kids still live in K.C., my grandson is with Reece Nichols.  I've been out of touch for a long time but it would be nice to hear from some of my class mates since we are here in Branson.  Come down and play our championship golf course.  By the way, I caddied at Milburn  country club with Dave McCall 60 years ago. - Jim

From Jim Turner (9-1-2016): Written by Jerry Hauser's wife to Kansas City Chiefs - My husband, Jerry W. Hauser, recently passed away and he was the Project Manager when Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums were built. He worked for Kevitt and Myers. I have come across the Schematic Design Drawings for both stadiums that Jerry had kept since 1968. I wanted to know if the Chiefs had any interest in displaying for the public to see. I also have the hard hat he wore during construction. Jerry was so proud of being able to make sure it was built the correct way. He inspected every inch of concrete during the construction. It was the highlight of his career. Even though we moved to Arizona in 2011, he remained an avid Chiefs fan. Thank you   Response from the Kansas City Chiefs: Thank you so much for reaching out to us. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. Please accept our sympathies. What a neat story about Jerry being the project manager for both Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums. I am sure he had some great stories from that experience. We appreciate you thinking of us when you came across the schematic design drawings. Our team historian, Bob Moore, is interested in learning more about them. I have copied Bob on this email so that you two can connect directly. Thank you again.

From Kit Thornton (8-12-2016): Hi, This is from Kit (Thornton) Buckley to say I regret that I am unable to attend the 55th Reunion.   Is it really so long ago!  I hope all who attend have a lovely time on the night, and I send my very best wishes to you all. - Regards, Kit

From Nina Haug (October 8, 2015): I was up to visit Mat last weekend. (Mat Haug, also SMN 1961- Nina and Mat are twins.) I was there for the Walk to Defeat ALS (thus the t-shirt). He can only communicate through his iPad. He only has weeks left to live as he is becoming very weak and out of breath. If anyone wants to contact him in a very positive way (he wants no sadness), now is the time. Matson’s email: matson.haug@gmail.com  I am not sure he is able to check it.  I send him humorous cards.. I think he is past reading emails because he is so weak he can not hold onto his ipad. It’s tough. - Nina

From Jim Thompson (4-26-15): Our head football coach at Shawnee Mission North is making the news big time with his touchdown on Saturday, April 25th, in the University of Kansas Alumni Football Game. Bryan Sperry was our head coach during the years we attended SMN. He left the school after we graduated and became a mathematics professor at Pittsburg State University. He still lives in Pittsburg and is very active with community events, alumni activities, and World War II related events. He is 89 years old. Coach Sperry graduated from high school about 1943 and entered World War II.  After leaving military service, he went to the University of Kansas and was a star receiver on the football team for the years 1946-48.  I stay in touch with Coach Sperry and am a Friend on Facebook. He enjoys a large family of sons, daughters, grandchildren, and others in the Pittsburg area. - Jim Thompson
(Editor's note: On Wednesday, April 29 on Fox News during the show “The Five,” they ran the video of Coach Bryan Sperry making his touchdown in the Kansas Alumni football game.)
